Lab Two
Other NOAA Temperature and Precipitation Tools
In this lab you will use several NOAA tools to examine and analyze temperature and precipitation patterns across the globe, for the U.S., for your state, and for a part of your state. Click below to watch a video tutorial, and then use all four of the tools described in the tutorial to analyze the trend in both temperature and precipitation at all four scales: global, national, state, and the part of the state where you live.
Step 1: Go to the Climate At A Glance web tool.
Prepare a report on the climatic conditions for the most recent year for which data is available for:
Your report must include:
Gather the Data and Graphics to Include in your Report:
a. Temperature and precipitation rankings for the division of the state where you live for the most recent 12-month period. Use the Climatological Rankings tool to gather this information.

b. Global Temp and Precip Maps. Use the Global Temperature and Precipitation Tool to generate a Global Land & Water Temp Anomaly Map, a Global Land Temp Percentile Map, a Global Precipitation Anomalies Map, and a Global Land Precip Percentile Map. Use the Global Temp and Precip Maps tool to gather this information.

c. Northern Hemisphere Surface Temperature Anomalies: Use the Global Temperature Anomalies Tool: Time Series to generate a chart to show temperature anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere from 1880 to the present over land surfaces. Be sure to display a trend line on your chart. Right click on the chart to capture it as a png image.

d. Statewide Temperatures: Use the Statewide Temperature Tool to generate five charts showing mean temperature trends for the state where you now reside: one annual chart and four seasonal charts.

Organize your charts, maps, and data tables into a coherent report with short paragraphs synthesizing each chart, map, and data table. Conclude your report by summarizing all of your findings. Include throughout your report how the changes you see in the data have affected or are affecting tribal cultural resources such as fish and wildlife and food and medicine plants and how they might affect cultural traditions. If you do not have knowledge of tribal traditions, you can conduct a phone interview with a tribal elder or tribal cultural resources person, telling them about your findings and asking how they think cultural resources might be affected.
You need the latest version of the free Adobe Flash Player for this lab.
